Sunday May 9th

It has been very quiet of late one or two nice Browns reported from the Felton area. The only fresh Salmon was caught by George English from the Tyne below Ovingham Bridge taken on fly weighing around the 8lbs mark.

Sunday April 18th.

The Coquet has dropped back to almost normal levels, the Trout fishing has picked up well over the last 10 days. Bob Smith from Morpeth has done well of late releasing all his fish which have come to small spiders and nymphs. Trout have been feeding well in the warmer afternoons with improving fly hatches. It was good to see the return of Sand Martins and Swallows picking up the odd flies. Still good numbers of both Salmon and Sea Trout kelts being reported from the Tyne and Coquet. Three fresh fish reported this week from the Coquet. Garry Pendleton had a good fish from the Green Hut area of around 7lbs caught on fly. Darren Ewart took a 5lb Salmon on a single hander from the White post caught on an Invicta. Amanda Perry took a 7lbs fish from Hound dene burn area caught on spinner. Sea Trout have been seen in the Streamfoot area fish also reported moving above the pass.

The work on the Cycle path at Rothbury is still on going but hopefully access to the Ladies bridge should be ok when the work is completed, extra hard core is to be laid next to cycle path. There will also be a new ramped area to provide access for disabled anglers to the river from the Beggars Rigg car park which will replace the winding path and steps.

Tuesday 30th March

The heavy overnight rain has made the Coquet unfishable levels are high and very coloured at midday the river was almost breaking it's banks in several places it has rained for most of the day so may come in higher to-night.

Monday 22nd March

The Coquet is in perfect condition with around 18inches extra water at Rothbury with a good colour. There were two Salmon reported caught yesterday one from the tidal and one from above the fish pass. The first fish was 11lb and sea liced the second 7lbs both Salmon were caught using spinning tackle.

The Trout season began with a good turn out of anglers a lot of familiar faces returning. It was a damp start to the day turning bright and breezy as the day progressed. Mixed reports with some anglers having caught and returned Trout but others were out of luck. There were  fish caught in the Felton, Pauperhaugh and Rothbury beats. The fish caught were mainly stockies and in good condition only the odd wild fish coming to the net, and these were thin and out of condition owing to the long and cold Winter. The best patterns were small spiders gold bead Hares Ear, pheasant tailed nymphs and small  black pennal. There has been good numbers of smoults moving downstream so would Trout anglers please take time to return these fish safely to help stocks in future years. There has also been good numbers of Sea Trout kelts seen and caught and again please take care and return safely these are coming to both fly and spinning rod.

27th February

The work to repair the Black Bridge Warkworth is now under way, would anglers please not block any access points as there will be a lot of heavy and long vehicles bringing in materials. Anglers can park in this area after 5.00pm. Work is expected to last until April.

Work is ongoing on the new cycle paths in the Rothbury area this has closed access to some of the footpaths especially the road down to the Ladies Bridge the layby is also closed near to the access point only parking available at present is the Beggars Rigg car park beside the picnic area.

The Coquet is running high at present around 3foot and heavily coloured due to snow melt and the continuous rain yesterday and snow overnight.

The weather has remained cold over the past fortnight water temperatures remaining low and the air temperature barely getting above 5c. The Coquet has been carrying extra water since the start of the season, snow still lying on the hills up the Coquet valley. There has been the odd fish reported seen on the lower reaches of the Coquet. The reports from the Tyne more encouraging a number of Sea Trout and Salmon kelts caught. One confirmed fresh fish of 7 to 8 pounds caught and safely returned, on fly in the Ovingham area.
